EPA cleanup, filling Sucker Flat in
full swing
As evident from Highways 171 and 249, excavators and haul trucks are working at full speed in removing mine waste from the Oronogo Duenweg Mining Belt EPA Superfund.
That waste, 12 feet deep in some places, is being dumped into Sucker Flat, a water-filled mine pit in King Jack Park.
Prior to this, a sturdy haul road had to be built through King Jack Park up to the south edge of the pit (top photo). At the same time, some mine waste within the park was used to fill a shallow lake.
It's estimated it may take two years to fill Sucker Flat. Once filled, it will be capped with top soil and be enhanced for park use. |
